    Waterproofing your Imp.

    Evening,
i am now at the stage where the paintwork on The Pest is more or less complete.
My question is what have you guys used to rustproof your Imp with a cavity wax or similar?
    Cheers
    Col

When I used to watch the steel bodied cars being made in Birmingham and Coventry they used to attempt to penetrate every single cavity with a hot sprayed wax. It is bound to be worth your while replicating this process albeit in a DIY manner. I would recommend you invest in a compressor powered sprayer rather than the hand pump version usually available for DIY. There will be differences of opinion as to what is the best brand to use but using any of the proprietary brands is surely better than nothing at all.

You could do worse than have a look here - https://www.rust.co.uk/

Well done on the near completion of your project. You have been very dedicated. I hope you enjoy driving the Pest in the near future.

Colin, DDG has the same wax as was mentioned by Graham from RUST.CO.UK

Plenty here if you want some.

With the shell as it is and nothing to really mask up its a perfect time.

It does need to go on warmish though.

What i did is first thin some down with white spirit as it is rather thick, used the schutz gun with a flexible end and fed it up the cavities and sprayed all the edges and seems, poked some holes along the length of the hoz at end of gun abd bunged up the hole at the end so it sprayed like a shower head all round and fed that up the sills, pillers, A pillar all way up through the top to the gutter, along back lower htach area, up columns, inside rear wings to lamp sections, the slightly thinned mix lets it seep in. Went back next day and fired some thicker raw stuff everywhere,

      Deed done.

the obvious seams I could see like the floor lip to middle sill, below seats, up inside dash area I brushed a little more in by hand.

Its not overkill but I already epoxy filled nearly every seem anyway.

Underbelly wise for seam sealer I did this George,

On Millie I took a different approach as I was repairing the panels where I epoxy coated everything and everywhere. Where things were solid but crusty and i could not get to it I sprayed in POR15 paint. I also used epoxy on every seam as the primary filler.

I have a spare 5L of the l=mil spec cavity wax if you want it Col

Graeme thank you for the link.

        John,
The Pest is all seam sealed ages ago before the before the top coat on the underside went on it so happy that's done. It's all the cavities and the inner cills etc that I need to protect now even thought where I welded it had all been primed with weld through primer and further coats of paint where I could like inside of the cills, heater channels etc..

5 litres of waxoyl should be enough for an Imp shouldn't it? Let me know what you want for it John and I will take it off you, when would be a good time to pop up your way for it?

        Cheers
        Col.

Any time OK for me Colin. I accidentlly ordered 5 x 5L instead of 5L so a tad extra over what i needed
