  • Exploded diagram of rear brakes

Just rebuilding my rear brakes, does anyone have an exploded diagram showing the spring retaining clips behind the slave cylinder? I can’t find one in the workshop manual.

also where is the grease that comes with the cylinders for?

    Thanks in advance

The grease is also to prevent the outer section of the cylinder and piston from corroding and jamming as forward of the seal its all exposed steel, just needs a smear

Same on the pivit points in the adjusters and slots for the shoes.

Dan, genuine ones getting hard to get now, I find the newer pattern ones to be a bit tight and the forms that sit in the shoes less than ideal.

If you have any problems let me know as i have a box of originals, just a bit grubby kept to one side.

Bob knows his stuff so hopefully he supplies NOS ones or the ones he has sourced are OK, if I recall they are ctually the same as MK 1 escort

Are there different backing plates for different years? My original ones have an extra collar. the new powder coated ones from graham Anderson don’t have it. Picture for comparison.

Yes the backing plates are different.

You can fit either to an early car as the early hub has the material removed.

You cant fit an early one to a later car or it can foul on the hub.

Either will hold the bearing in fine.

Hub wise the resting stops for the shoes and the area where the cylinder slides are the most improtant bits as a jamming handbrake lever or cylinder is a right pain.

                  / John

Thanks John, so the larger opening is from a later car?

Yip, fronts are the same scenario, surprised Graham did not mention it but then again they fit anyway

The return spring looks really close to the wheel cylinder or the wheel cylinder looks very wide, is it just the angle ?

Looks like that to me too, may just be the shows out if line a bit making it look worse.
