        This is brilliant and thank you for taking the time and effort in recording the steps to rebuild an Imp gearbox with helpful tips and photos which are invaluable to anyone attempting to rebuild their own gearbox.

        I doubt I would ever have the patience and skill to rebuild one.

              • Normal you would fit the input shaft and fit the belhousing casting tighten the nuts hand tight then wind in the inner screwed sleeves to to push the outer sleeves out in the location grooves ,but you wouldn't be able to see that so I'll do a dry build to show what happens and how to get true nip

                • Oil the bearings and wind the inner sleeves in to protrude inwards 1/16" 1.5mm fit the cages on the diff and lower it into the casing Click image for larger version

                  • Check that there's clearance between the crown wheel and pinion .
                    now wind the cage side in, as the outer bearing case contacts the taper it will push the outer screwed sleeves to the outside of the grooves when resistance is felt this is true nip,and your sleeves should be at the outside of the grooves.
                    At this point you tighten the nuts fully and start to set the preload and backlash

                              You are right there Gary, we all do what we feel comfortable with I guess. I like bashing metal about and can turn my hand to most things too but once it gets all technical with clearances and all that measuring and double checking of fine things I'm lost. It would take me way too long.

                              I did rebuild the Blackbird engine John but the gearbox comes apart in 3 large pieces which you don't need to strip... well I didn't..

                              That video explains backlash so easily to me now, thanks Gary.

                              • Next is the clutch side of the input shaft .
                                Give it a good clean and examine the splines for wear as you can see in the photo the difference with the splined thinning with wear Click image for larger version
