  • At first I set up a dial clock like in the manual but it must have a right angle attachment that you can't see because you can't get on the face of the crown wheel correctly Click image for larger version

      • There's.008" backlash it's close but not correct yet
        we want .0035" to .0055".
Now we can preload the bearings from the cage side only.
It says in the manual to turn the cage side in 90 degs
When I spoke to Dave Weedon on this he said he only preloads about 60 degs as it puts a lot of load on side casing .
I preloaded mine 60 degs and lined up the cut outs
With the 7" handle tool I could only just get 60 degs
any more and I would have needed a longer tube on That gives you an idea that it's a lot of preload

        • This pic shows the gear side the the red marks are where it was before preload the marks were together and where the inner sleeve was Turned to get the correct backlash you turn the cage side out the same as you turn in the gear side Click image for larger version

            • The clock reads .005"
finger clocks are cheap to buy second had this one I've had for years but only ever used it as a comparator .
If you don't have the correct length finger on, it will not read correctly
Set it up on a flat surface at zero and slide a feeler gauge under and see what it reads it gets worse the thicker the feeler gauge.
This clock is actually reading.004" which is fine

                  • Put the reverse plunger spring and cone in and locate the plate in the selector slots, move it up slightly to allow reverse selector to slide in note the two slots towards you .
be careful don't try this with it stud up it will drop in the box .
Locate it in the plate and fit the small roller to stop it dropping out .
Your now ok to stand it up Click image for larger version

                          • Gary so does that "breather" hole actually match up with that holoow shaft, so the pressure is released from the actual box itself ?
