  • Extra options for sealing end of transaxle perhaps without removing box

OK, I have had my trabnsaxle rebuilt twice now and it still leaks like it has a hole.

On teardown the O ring was nicked but to drop that amount of oil something else up.

So new o rings arrived and I also ordered a double liped seal from simply bearings to try at the end of the gearchange shaft.

Plan is to make something wimilar to the black dust cover so the OD is same size as the casting and my intention is to bond this to the end

    Will keep you updated

Hi John on the later boxes I think there is enough room to machine an extra o ring groove in IAM looking at trying it out on the scrap cover I have, the one with the groove off center

      Gary Whitaker made a start

In the end I did not need to machine anything

The final result using my "short shift" gear selector

Started off getting the back end of the box back in with a new but slightly oversize O ring then test fit the seal over the now highly polished shaft

Problem to overcome is that the distance that can be used is about equal to the existing rubber dust boot

So as I need the boot to cover it again it was time to shave off some of the thick end, time for knife and block

Second problem and reason I needed the boot is rootes never seem to machine anything in the centre !

Whatever you do, once you grease up the seal dont drop it on the floor ..... or back to the start

And some instant gasket to seal things up before the standard tie wrap, the casting was scratched a little to makew a key

Finally back in with the detent ball and spring with a little loctite

        Gears seem to engage fine

Will fill with some oil tomorrow and tip it on its end to see if it leaks

I was losing 1/2L at a time and sick of topping it up so if no drips we should be good to go (on flange seal and shaft)
