  • Hillman Imp Singer Chamois Throttle Cable Alternatives

Standard Imp throttle cables can be a bit course and getting hard to find .
So I fitted Shimano Dura ace BC9000 bicycle cable outer - its available off a roll so you can buy any length you need .
The only issue is its thinner ( but stiffer for a better response ) so it doesnt fit the floor clips .
No problem though , count the clips and add this amount of one inch lengths of washer bottle pipe before fitting , use WD40 or a small amount of grease when you slide it on then you can move it to the clip positions when its fitted .
For the inner i used rear Tandem brake cable , get the stainless one as the BC9000 is polymer lined anyway , you need the pear shaped nipple end not the barrel , this fits into the old cable clip as the factory one does . Clark or Fibrax are the best , ive used both and they are more than long enough
Whilst your at it get a brake adjuster for a side pull brake , drill the bracket slightly so the adjuster fits through , or you could tap it too the same thread as the adjuster ( for Solex or 28/36 or twin SUs as Strombergs already have one ) , makes fine adjustment easy and a ten second job .

I've been using bicycle Bowden cable since the 80's for my throttle cables. I also use round bodied solder on brass nipples (motorcycle cable repair parts) to make the desired fit at the pedal end. They fit nicely into the brass insert that is found inside electrical connector block terminals, and then you have two screw holes - one to lock the nipple of the cable in place, the other to put through pedal arm with a suitable washer. Has been on the car and been used for competition for almost thirty years.

A Tandem brake cable will work as it is just over 3 meters in length and smooth finish on it and when added to a Shimano outer brake cable or similar that has a teflon inner will make the pedal nice an easy.
I've used a similar set up on The Pest with a solderless nipple at the pedal end instead of the carb end. Either way will work.

Would cost around £15.00 John with the solderless nipple.

        Cheers
        Col.
