  • Sport valve-spring cups

    Hi there

I can't seem to get a consistent answer on this so am trying asking the question in lots of places as am sure the answer is out there...

    What am I on about?

Well basically I have a bare Sports head and am accumulating the parts I need to make it functional.

I've got the valves but think I need 8 cups.

This is where the confusion arises & below is what what I know:
    • STD heads have 4 plain cups under the exhaust-valve springs
    • STD heads had 4 'hat-shaped' cups, incorporating the seals, under the inlet-valve springs
    • Sport head don't use seals so if they have cups for the valve-springs they would presumably all be the same
    • the parts list shows 8 cups for the Sport valve-springs but they are on top of the springs and had a different size hole in middle and deeper lip than the STD cups
Anyway I drew up a sort of key on the parts list drawing which may make it easier to follow. I've had a variety of answers on the subject but as yet there doesn't seem to be any trace of the Sport cups.

Someone said the Sport ones are shields to keep oil away from the valve guides. Someone else said that's wrong as the engine is inclined. Someone else said they definitely didn't exist and the Sport springs sit directly on the alloy. Someone else offered me some spares but they look identical to the STD ones.

I have no idea what the answer is but I'm guessing most ppl just put STD ones under the springs

I have always had cups under the springs on mine, only difference is the double springs

I just checked my spare 107 head and it has cup on bottom (so springs dont hit the alloy) but no extra cup at top, only the flange and collets

      Thanks for that John.

Really strange about the detail in the parts lists but I guess if 7100047 & 7100452 are same thickness it won't make any difference

Would not be the first time the exploded drawings had parts in the wrong order or even missing

The MK 1 throttle assemblies I am doing at the moment has the parts in the wrong order. I think soewhere in one edition the brake assemblies are incorrect also ! and had prompted discussion on more than one occasion.

See below, couple of pics from an assembled 107 early sprot head pulled off a good engine in favour of a big port head about 6 months back
