  • has anyone successfully used waterless coolant with an IMP engine

Query, has anyone successfully used waterless coolant with an IMP engine, standard cooling system and standard pump? I've completely renewed all my cooling system new everything and it's completely dry so ideal if I was to fill it with Evans say, I like the idea of no pressure and no corrosion but know it makes the engine run hotter as its not as efficient at cooling as water antifreeze mix.

I normally use 50 50 Bluecol but that only has a life of 2 years OR I could use the Volvo long life antifreeze but both of course use water and thus could cause scaling and corrosion, none are perfect I know. I'm not bothered about the cost and waterless is I know expensive compared to normal antifreeze, but if it lasts years and years then it pays for itself after a few years anyway.

Just wondering if someone is currently using it and has not noticed any adverse effects? I've read it's better if you have an electric pump to increase the flow but I'm not going down that route, otherwise I will stay with antifreeze. Thanks for any info.

70/30 Bluecol and change it at recommended intervals. The less anti-freeze you have the more efficient the cooling but you need it to prevent corrosion so add just enough to prevent that. It is not a big job to change and flush the system every other year also not expensive to do and the flushing ensures a clean system. Using de-min water also helps. An overflow tank ensure the system can be filled to the max with the least amount of air in the system as you want to remove as much air as possible as liquid cools better than air. I currently have on test a pump that I have cerakoted and added stainless steel faces to the shaft for the seals to run on. Also there is a picture of a brand new rad 12 months later that suddenly caused very rapid over heating on a imp rally car the owner used Volvo long life coolant! You need to be very careful thinking more modern is better. On some things yes but the quality of anti-freeze and oil for example now compared to the 60's is far superior so no need to change the spec thinking it will work better. The Volvo stuff is designed to go in a car capable of doing 200K miles used daily and with a higher pressure system completely sealed from air intrusion. The use most classics get the Volvo stuff is no good. Will do a post about overflow tank and how this improves cooling.
