My way of thinking is that bottom plate on oil pump could possibly be in fresh air ,or rather oil pipe joint where it meets bottom plate of pump could be in fresh air in which case air could be drawn into pump?
do you prime the pump on initial build (first start up) or does it automatically suck up from empty ?

On another score , if you could do template of BSK plate , that'd be helpful to me , it's just getting the main cap bolt positions in relation to sump bolts means alot of flaffing about setting block on mill .

BSK is way out so when torquing it would be fighting against the BSK, no wonder it leaked at the bottom end!

Yes but l cannot see why anyone would fit a plate so badly distorted knowingly?

While waiting on engine parts and the trasnaxle was out, time to stop the leak at end casing for change shaft

So off with the end and left to drain, filled about 300 miles ago and just over a litre came out..... including what was already in the kitty litter tray



Issue found, o ring was brick hard and actually split / nibbled.



There is plenty spare length on the shaft so while it is off I think I will see if I can add an extra external seal to the end of the shaft box.

Question now is if these are just old nuts that have been loctited back on or are they loose, being loose would explain the weird noises from back end when driving for sure !

For now engine crated up and ready for a rebuild. Nothing i can do as machining required.

What machining work needs to be carried out then John?

If l'm looking at it right? crimped section is nowhere near cut out on shaft ,where l think it should be?
Possibly put back in different positions so crimps look wrong?

The gearbox should be OK, reuse of nuts and loctited apprantrly and as its not fell apart yet I reckon its ok.

The pallet/create contains the 998 out of DDG and a spare crank just in case.

I am unsure if the scroll seal will hold again so likely it will need a seal kit

Top bearing cap and wear from crank, no sure the crank running clearances were correct

Almost like it's been line bored off centre on that main or cap shell had shim behind it?
Yes while it's down go for seal kit , stupid not too

Bob, certainly the running clearances were not correct.

So its back to the drawing board but something is certainly not correct and whatever it is requires some precision measuremenst and then put right.

I have seen shim material behind the bearings quite often when breaking teh engines down..

So have l , 70 -90 years worth , but l can put it right again , l'd be looking at the mains bore alinement myself if that's the only terrible wear.

Transaxle mods done, leak hopeully gone forever

Adding the extra double lip seal ended up being not as bad as I thounght, some instant gasket, cut dust over, all sorted.

Just a shame rootes never machine anything in the middle where it should be !

Started another batch of washer jets today , worked out you can only get 20 cars worth out of 2 metre long bar , should be on the shelf for quite a while , never made a batch that big before.

There is no sightings of the 998 so picked up this 930 B1 bottom end.

But fixing the loose coolant banjo did not end well

And the red cam cover haad to go and just so happenned I had one that had just been vapour blasted



So painted other one black then noticed the threads on oil filler neck had been opened up, why do people butcher things like this ?

So cleaned, epoxied, re drilled then tapped correctly
