Had a great tip from Andy to check the screws on the butterflies on the 28/36 but all there, managed a couple of pics before the battery gave out



So out with the plugs

CYL4,3,2 all dry and CYL 3 looks as if it has something going on but no dents in pistons anyway

CYL1 though, thats the rings now completely gone I reckon as this was the greeting at TDC, not a drip any more, a flood !

So best case it needs stripped and cleaned now

Just ordered a stud and ARP nut kit from Mark so I can shim the head on the bench, going to pull the R20 for now and drop in a standard sport.

Hopefully all sorted this week unless some really had let loose and I find shattered bits, at least if its shattered steel bits the magnetic sump plug could catch it

Car on axle stands,small table lift picked up as surplus, couple bloxks of wood, sorted

Not a drop of water in oil or oil in water, a good sign so far given the coolant in cyl 1, bit of emulsion on the breather tube but nothing anywhere else so dodged the buller there

And after all that found reason for the random bottom end rattle, oil pickup was loose. Easy fix



Lets me fix the sump / block plate oil leak properly now.

But of course one has been left with a little carnage (all in order though) so time to check bearings and rings to find any evidence of the rattle and then back together

Good to see the BSK plate , as l've cut three plates today ready to put all holes in , probably have to put block on mill and map out hole positions first unless someone can point me in correct direction for drawing.
At least they'll be good old imperial .

Nope, all works halted now as main and b/e bearing isnpection put a damper on well, everything so looks like new crank or at least new bearings or I take the damn thing and toss it in teh skip.

Not good news there John, sorry to hear that the big ends have given up.
Its not done a huge amount of miles either has it?
Bummer.

Just less than 1500 miles and I have sahres in the oil company

Still discussing root cause, oil was first up but then again the loose oil pickup and high capcity pump combo may have contributed.

Can only move forward from here, current state of mind is throw it in skip as I currently have no faith in the crank (or its original regrind) at all.

I was OK yesterday, quite matter of fact, today a different story so I will be walking away from it for now until the red mist clears.

Not sure on scheme of layout , but if loose pipe connection is in fresh air and not immersed in oil , possibly sucking air in that case?
if bottom plate of pump was under oil level it wouldn't lose oil albeit that pipe is loose , haven't looked at build up of engine yet so if last comments were nonsense ?, then sorry.
Looking at your picture there's no way pipe is under oil so my moneys on that loose oil pipe .

I don't have enoughe xperience of how the pump works when the pickup is loose, I would like have to set it up and try

Not seen how loose the oil pickup was and where oil/air could be drawn.

It does pose the question of wether the main bearings could have been oil starved and this is the reason they look so bad!

Think the crank needs checked by an expert on whatever machine is used to check this.
