Getting closer to paint day !!

A long way from the beginning



Still plenty to do though

In case anyone did not know there are 1/2 floor pans available from Bob Allan at Imp Club Spares

The Imp Club can however only sell to members, an unfortunate limitation on non profit and tax status

They are however only £75 a side ! well worth paying membership if you need these.

I took the oppertunity while there was a car on the jig to trim the panels to fit, so here you see them on stand alone and trimmed to fit.

It would have been nice to have them in a heavier guage and in Zintec but seems that was not to be so before fitting these they would need ripped, stripped, etched and coated..... as many areas are not accessible after fitting.




I do not need these for this car but do need them for my next car, a June 63 MK 1 (look up Doris)

OK, the time is upon us, getting closer to assembly to a rolling shell for paint,

First underbelly prep and epoxy seal, then primed, then colour, then etch primed again and gravitex wet on wet

Then next day another etch prime and 2 coats of colour. If this thing rusts before I die I will be shocked !!!

Dont worry about the two colours, I had a pot of black to be used up as on consumables I do first in first out to rotate the tins

And a few more coats paint, primer, stone chip and epoxy and thats the job a good un !

And now we are on to getting it to rolling shell

Remeber all thos parts I said to do in advance, now they are needed !

And what next, oh yeah, BODY PREP : and I hate it with a passion, especially white stuff !


So outside to the prep area to make a big mess, what you did not expect me to do it in the workshop, really the neighbours would complain !


Rule number 1, NEVER rely on fibreglass replacement being OK, they are hand made, can be full of things needing fixed like VOIDS between the gel coat and the resin and such

OK time to see how all the little repairs have came out and if
anything else needs done so the top half was painted as
was the top half down to swage line, all insides, all door
checks and so on






Turned out not to bad straight out the gun, would have been an easy cut and polish if there was not still some small scratches and fillets of repair visible.






So back to blocking, flatting, some scrapings of dolphin glaze, block and a couple of coats of etxh primer filler ( Mipa 4:1 H5 Activator )







And now back in workshop ready to paint

So portable both erected inside for heat and light and fitted with extraction

Then on with more primer filler, wet on wet with the colour ( Standox 2K ) and a few coats of Max Meyer lacquer.

The panels, doors, pockets, grille, bonnet, engine cover were done one evening and the shell the next



















And rolled back out the booth to add some bits on

No pictures of the cavity wax session as I got covered in the stuff and was totally peeved off that day.

One thing next day was a small pin hole

Had to be fixed, so mix up some epoxy on a stick, mask off and fill, then colour, deed done

And for the next episodes the fun stuff, mods , seats, wiring..... then fuel injection !

And doors now on, thats only a recent development but now set thanks to a big mash hammer, block, pry bar and a lot of swearing !












And seats placed in order to set height and position, these MGB seats were a snip, leather is hardly marked at all and came with runners that should drop in.

A small mod for today, follws on from Dave Washer Bottle mod and twin resevoirs for brake / clutch.

As I have relocated the resevoirs away from the front slam panel, the hole is prime real estate for the washer fluid.

Cue the re-tasking of a expansion tank.




Just leaving the sealant to cure for a bit as I had to slice/dice the tank edge to avoid the headlamp bowl.

A few rvnuts and job should be a good un. Might add brakets for the electric bonnet opener at same time

Not a lot has been happening ut as High_dan sent me some pictures of the resevioirs going in I thought i would at least mock mine up pending final install tomorrow evening



So time to have a session makeing the lines up, the resevoirs have 7/16 female fittings on the bottom so made up 2 short 1/4" hard line entries for those and matching hard line entries and some 7/16" male fittings on the master cylinders.





In between I have chosen to do same as I do on VWs where the low pressure feed has a large hose component to them, in this case it is Coline-2337
NOTE : DO NOT EVER EVER buy this from suppliers you do not trust as there is plenty copy stuff goinga round and you risk it rotting out !



This hose is also only for low pressure or gravity fed lines and should never be used on any high pressure critical areas.

OK, scared, you should be, it is brakes after all !

Need some proper job hose clips and some rivnuts to attach the resevoir bracket and will sort that out tomorrow.

Might even get the washer box in after I insulate it !
