Well, it's been a long time since I posted and not much has progressed but.....
I put epoxy on to preserve over the winter as much as anything as I removed all the paint off the roof where many spiders had grown under the paint. Then I decided that I would put the engine and gearbox back so I could drive it to the back of the house. Then discovered that there were some wires in the loom that were brittle and had many cracks along their length so I've got some trailer cable and just today fitted these down the sill channel along with a couple of Hester hoses. So that's where we stand at the moment.
I'm planning to make up the loom in accordance with John Ross diagram so will see how that progresses.

Hi Col, no I don't have any extraction going on and probably should. It is pretty dusty now might see if I can get a fan of sorts. Don't really want the overspray going over the neighbours cars tho.?

You need some kind of air exit as you will be blasting more air in from the air cap on the gun and it will go out like a balloon if nowhere to go

Keep the floor very wet so the crap stays where it lands

If you use a HVLP gun with a 1.3/1.5 air cap, do wet coats and more of them the over/excess spray will be minimal, issue is the dry droplets in the air will land on the paint without extraction so you want to have a few decent coats so there is plenty to cut back to get rid of the crud that will land, primarilly on the top panels.

Plan B is to do the car in stages.

Wings plus front
Scuttle plus roof,
Door checks and rear wings/rear hatch

Do the bonnet, doors and engine cover horizontal (not hanging) you will get the same result as on roof of car but less likely runs if you lay it on a bit thick (plus easier to see)

John, sounds like a good plan to wet the floor that should help. I was doing bit by bit as you are suggesting and the roof is the worst as yes, there are lots of droplets and they seemed to be amalgamating like planets forming in the dust storm! Will see how it goes tomorrow and report back.

Oh and yes it's solid colour and I'm going to try some 1k lacquer they claim it saves the tedious cutting back job! We shall see.

DON'T lacquer it unless you ae doing 2K and wet on wet and thats bloddy hard, otherwise you will just have crud under the clear coat and no matter what you do it wont be cut back.

I should never had a clear coat on DDG. Dont make same mistake

What do you mean by droplets / planets ?

Do you have an water/oil filter at the gun ? as in this weather the humidity is high and you will get a lot of condensation in the air line as the air flow chills it

Droplets usually the air cap is trying to atomise paint that is too thick for the setup, base/gloss coats usually 1.3-1.5 as they should be thinner, epoxies and primer/filler usually 1.8 but putting your colour coat in a 1.8 will be shifting through paint and harder to lay down as it will be a large volume.

The distance will also make a difference as you will need to find the sweet spot for your gun, just open up the needle (no material) and as you approach the nozzle with your hand you will hear the note change, thats where your gun is happy distance wise.

What gun are you using, an HVLP would be perfect as you only need to give it say 20 psi to get 10 psi at the cap. Viscosity will depend on the paint system, on General/Standox 2K paints I can usually thin them down to 30%

If its pooling around something on the surface thats bad. Usually its solvent reaction or some kind of oil/water
