Hi Mike,
Thank you for your thoughts on the modified sump I have been messing with this last week or so.
I completely understand where your coming from and your concerns of modifying away from the manufacturers design. Some of your thoughts I have also had and agree with. The volume I have taken out from the bottom where I have cut is replaced by the extension to the left side on the first photo above where I have drilled more holes for oil to flow and for the shortened pickup to be repositioned. The original pick up is like an S shape as it comes from the left to the deeper part of the sump(the removed part). This will be shortened but with the pipe being vertical instead of the S shape With me shortening the sump and using the left hand side I have actually gained volume for the oil capacity not by much but around 300ml. Sump volume has increased slightly which is a wee win.
The original oil cooler is being used although with slightly longer pipework. Johns suggestion of finning the sump sounds like a great idea in theory and would look great but I have no intention of doing this, not only for the reasons you gave of over cooling but also as I am a tight arsed Scotsman I wont be paying for something solely for aesthetics that isn't required.
With the bike engine being in the car I have already fitted a sump baffle and taken out the balancer shafts as these share oil with number three mains and are notorious for running dry as the oilway is shared with the balancer shafts and when in a car the oil goes to the balancer shafts starving number 3 of oil. The oilways have been blocked for this reason also.
Westfield Sportscars used to use a shortened sump in their car that used the Blackbird engine, other manufacturers or 7'esque builders have used an Accusump alone or along with a dry sump kit with this engine which unfortunately is out of my budget. I contacted Westfield for some info on their sump they used and if one was available but they have come away from bike engined cars now so none were available.
The sump that has been chopped isn't the one from the car but a spare I bought specifically to be chopped along with a spare oil pick up and pressure relief valve, I will be replacing any original baffling the manufacturer had cast into the original sump bottom around the pick up so it mimics the original but in a shallower form.
Rains the engine is out of the question as I have no room above the engine with the cars b /airbox being close to the underside of the rear window. A sump guard is an option and can still be done this way but would reduce the ground clearance by a bit below 4" that I have at the moment for the sump but could offer protection all the same with considerate driving.
One thing that has to change is the exhaust as this does sit very low at 3" of clearance and already rubs a bit on the ground when there is a slight incline which I hope to be tackling sometime next week.
I will post photos of the clearance for some thoughts.
I appreciate any thoughts or opinions on what I am doing to the Imp as there's more than one way to skin a cat and others with more experience/knowledge and willing to share it is great for the car and the forum.
Cheers
Col.
