Well here is the damage to the motor when it loses the head of the valve or when the collets let go. Head of the valve sitting on top of the piston and the damage that caused to the head below.
Will put it to the side for the moment until I get all the relevant parts so it can be fixed in the next few weeks.
For now I will be sorting out the tracking with Keith's Trackrite alignment tool he gave me ages ago.
Then when the reverse gear sprocket arrives have a go at that aswell.

A bonus today and on a happier note is the MX-5 has now gained an MOT so will be razzing around with L plates on it very shortly once I tax it.

Yeh, we're both chuffed that the MX5 is now mot's, will have it taxed this week and get using it and Baillie to learn to drive.
Hopefully the Pest will go together easily once I have all the parts for it Keith.

Hi Col, I've now rewired it and I am waiting for a wiper wheelbox from Bob then I can put dash etc back in. Then back to some painting the bits that failed to meet quality control standards!?

It has been a we while since I have been on here with a anything to say about progress on the Pest but I have replaced the cylinder head and all is well with the engine turning over easily once again with a new cylinder head but I have still to start it up and check all is well there.

In the mean time along with the cylinder head replacement I bought an gear so I can have an electric reverse. This will fit between the diff and the propshaft. I used the interweb ot see who made such a gear for this purpose and MK Sportscars came up trumps so one was ordered, Unfortunately it was too small for the room that I have and the starter motor couldn't fit close enough to engage the gear.


Back to the drawing board.

There is a similar build going on at Retro Rides forum with a Chamois and a Yamaha R1 motor in the back very similar to how I have fitted the Blackbird motor to the Pest. The chap there has an electric reverse and used a ring gear from a Suzuki SJ410 with great results.
So of I went and ordered a Suzuki SJ410 ring gear from India... all £16.00 worth delivered to me in 2 1/2 weeks later, then it was of to the machine shop to have a centre made to suit the MX-5 diff.
That was all dropped of yesterday so this weekend I will be messing around to see if it all works out in round 2.


This weekend will be fettling the cradle so all of this will fit and I can have a reverse gear

Also have a new differential going in from another MX-5 but this one is a Fuji LSD with a higher gear ratio which will help it from being so revvy at speed I hope.

Not having much luck either, looks like the wills rings are weepin when cold a little so engine out time here as well

You are correct but I didn't say what year I would be there in the Pest .

That is a nightmare having to pull the motor out and strip it. I know how that feels. Bummer.
