1970 Deluxe aka The Pest a very long process

Spoke to Kevin at Cable-Tec.co.uk on Wednesday about a push pull cable for the gear selection on the Pest, took a few measurements Wednesday night. Ordered on the Thursday and came home this evening to find it had arrived earlier today.
Top class service that I'd say.

So if your after any cables, these guys have got to be recommended.

It means I have something else to think about, fabricate fit etc

This afternoon I have been making up a bracket/cable stop for the gear shifting cable I had delivered on Friday.
Here is what I made up to hold the cable so it can shift the gears at the gearbox engine end.

Here is attached to the framework.

Here it is actually engaging gear with me holding the camera and trying to shift it up and down the gears so excuse the shakey video... I haven't been drinking.... Honest

Now to make the other one that will attach to the frame where the Imp gear selector rod would be if I had an Imp gearbox.

Cheers Keith, happy that I can see it shifting gears easily.

With the bracket fabrication over the weekend I continued this today with a bracket for the opposite end of the gear shift cable.

This photo shows the routing of the cable between the two brackets.

Also shows the next step that will attach the cable to the original Imp gaer shift set up. I will replace the flexi part that attaches to the gearbox with a solid bar with a rose joint attached which will be fixed to the linkage yiu can see.

This afternoon I continued with the gear shift mechanism for the Pest and finished it so I can now connect it to the original Imp gearshift rod and gearstick.
First thing to to was to cut out a little channel so the cable wouldn't foul the framework, then make up the support bracket for the pivot lever bearing housing to bolt to.

Happy with the position of that I then welded an M6 bolt to an 8mm solid bar to act as if it was the Imp gearshift rod to see if it all works.....

It does!!!

No need to worry about a wtf post John.. . I won't be doing that I'm positive of that.

Then again only if you decided to turbo charge your car and slam it into the weeds on air and put dark windows into it... That may get a wtf reaction.

How does the gearshift work, is it up down like a bike or like normal on a car, and how about reverse?

The gearbox will work the same way as the bike Pat but with the cable and lever I have fabricated doing the work that your foot would do on the bike moving the cut down gear lever from the bike you can see in the video.
The last video shows the rod that will pass through the rear crossmember which will attach to the original set up from the Imp to the gearstick and choke assembly inside the car. Looking inside the car it will look like a standard Imp gearstick set up..

Only the gearstick assembly will look standard as pretty much everything else has been changed...... a bit


Nearly forgot about the reverse you asked about Pat........Erm.. there isn't one but there is a passenger seat and when there is a passenger they will be known as the reverse gear .
Not a huge amount of room to fit a reverse so will have to be very careful where I park etc. initially and maybe next winter I can work in fitting a reverse gear using a starter motor and a gear on the very short propshaft as that is the way the kit car guys do it I believe. how effective it is I am not entirely sure, probably be only any good on a flat car park to be honest.
