  • Hillman Imp MK 1 aka " Doris " - YNC 319A - originally 4173 FM

Well what can we say about Doris.

This is the car I actually want to restore but all the others managed to get in the way for the past years.

Paul Coulter had it stashed away in a lock up in Ayrshire after picking it up in 2014 along with PKE321M (Ex Kent Police Imp) and you can see a picture here

    https://www.theimpclub.co.uk/wp-cont...ary-2016-1.pdf

Paul is also an author and playright and loves his Imp history

    https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/p...-gears-2808651

    He released this in 2013

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Our-Hillman.../dp/1908931310

So as you will expect, the car came with a fair amount of research on its origins.

One thing that the DVLA would not do unfortunately was asign the initial registration to the car 4173 FM as the original owner had retained it which is why it ended up with an A plate and the current registration YNC 319A. Between Paul and The Imp Club who has a dedicated DVLA contact the muddle was sorted out.

To rubber stamp the originality I requested a Heritage Certificate from Bob Allan at The Imp Club on behalf of the Rootes Archive Trust

The heritage certificate (see example on link above) is simply a lookup from FACTORY records and confirms the vehicles details and when it was actually made and the series it was made in.

From Doris certicificate as well as being confirmation that the car is actually what it is we got the following information.

    Make and Model

Hillman Imp de Luxe Mark I

    Chassis Sequence

B.411000001 to B.411080404 then B.419080405 onwards. Mark II de Luxe was introduced in 1965.

    Total Production

440,032 Imps were built at Linwood. 80,404 Mark I de Luxe from the first series, other sources indicate total 98,077 including export with 7,440 in CKD form.

Around 33,000 Imps were sold in the UK in 1963.

    Specification

2-door saloon, home market, standard specification

    Transmission Type

    4-speed manual, all synchromesh

    Identification Numbers

    Car-chassis B.41100505X HSO; Engine: B.41100505X, 875cc, 4-cylinder ohc high compression (10:1)

    Colour

Exterior Foam White (code 8); Interior trim: Black

    Approx. Dates

Manufacture week ending 14/6/1963, exact day not recorded

    Registration Mark

4137 FM registered on 1/7/1963. This mark was available in Chester from June 1962. Records maybe in the Chester office. Now YNC 319A, an age related plate issued on 13/4/1989. YNC would originally have been for the Manchester Borough area.

    Other Information

    A car like this would have cost £532 including £92-4/7 purchase tax. Parts list 6601249 or 6601476 ; Handbook 6601017 ; WSM.141 6601284

Only deviation from factory records is the interior colour which is actually red (not black)

And a few more pics the car overall looks like it is in reasonable condition but actually the floor edges have been repaired with B 7 Qs finest sticky stuff then dummied over with under seal. It is actually quite a good cover up ! and actually had even me fooled until I tried to scrape it off.

So the restoration of this one went to back of the bus.

Project for 2020 and the last imp I will be restoring ( in the world ever ! )

Every car has a unique personality, this one is no different.

We already have an original MK 1 August 1963 car we use for shows and events and that is Mildred Regestration 1444PF which we became custodians of after taking over from Mike Andrews.

So at least we have a extremely factiry car to compare against for Doris !

Time to look at the engine that ahs been lying for so long

Not good news, not sure if I will get away with the scoring but head bolt bosses on the block one needs attention.

Clean up then check rings and bores. Looks like I will need to be hunting another curly engine though as this one might only be fit for a rebuild

Decided to look at the engine that was on Doris

Broken top of liners in that one although the crank looks OK even although -10.

So thats the spare engines checked and no good

Looks like I will need to go buy an engine now damn damn damn

            Doris has seen the light

After years of storage that is Doris emptied and torn down ready to trabnsport to the workshop

Shocking how many parts are NOT on a Mk 1 imp compared to the Chamois model that we all love.

No dash to speak of, no door cappings, no door cappings...... nout

All the original parts have been kept and are actually in suprisingly good condition.

I have the interior in attic at home, considering the age most of the issues are faded red vbinyl and stitching that has just rotted.

Even the headlining is still intact but I have my hesitations on refitting it, I have 3 of these headlinings so I am messing with the idea of having a local trimmer try and clean and patch the original up.

              So stripped, bagged and tagged

Somne of the repair areas, most expected,

Doris has now landed in the workshop

The workshop is pretty much "work in progress" like the car itself

Primary survey now done after getting it on the jig. Not as bad as I thought, all the usual suspects

The passenger rear floor was as bad as though through and the usual sweeping the car off the floor

And more of the same born stuff

Very surprising but the front valance is nowehere near as bad as I though, certainly not worth a 1/2 valance or the full NOS front panel I have so thats 2 spare panels to sell on

The inner wheel tub outer repair sections also arrived from ESP so tried them against the factory front wings.

A few small tweaks and at least the inner arch section will seat perfectly, a lot better than the one I tried a few years back, we really are starting to get much better quality panel availability now

                              Hey John,

No need to ask what you will be doing over the festive period then? ,

Think you are going to be kept very busy with the cutting disc, grinder and welder for a while.

                              Good luck with Doris.

                              Cheers
                              Col.
