  • Mk1 Restoration project Doris - Getting Back To her Rootes for IMP 60

Another whole restoration project story but this time it is a very early IMP MK1 manufactured during week ending 14th June 1963 with original registration 4137 FM

The car is in need of a lot of love if she is to make it back to the road in time for her 60th birthday in 2023 and while the work is extensive it is not as bad a proposition as it once was given the quality replacement panels available at this time.

The project was started by me in 2017 but the amount of work required at that time after dismantling the car was simply too much and it was wrapped up and packed away for another day, 5 years later here we are and thanks to Expressed Steel Panels we can now go ahead with a much better restoration using their excellent panels.

Amongst other project supporters such as the excellent service from Imp Club Spares we will show this work in small bites along with some video (aplogies for my impaired monotone voice in advance ) and hopefully give an insight into the Imp bodywork anatomy in a little more detail than still images and long boring text.

Imp bodywork seems now to be the major hurdle to Imp restoration and hopefully we can show this work, using quality panels is not as onerous as they first look.

It is also my hope that some help will come forward from some younger enthusiasts but they may be reluctant for consent to appear, they will be credited but may not appear as the consent requirements for young persons may be too extensive. It will however be great to pass on some skills and experience as well as giving the Imp marque some good online exposure.

The restoration will be "home garage style" and not all uber workshop style, it will be good to constrain it to home restoration boundaries and as such there will also be running costs on panels and man hours with each stage as well as "The Imp Toolbox" list.

Toolbox list is exactly as it sounds, essential tools will be added to the list as they are used. Want to know what you need in the luggage compartment just in case

Again apologies in advance on the video and commentary, I am much happier fabricating than appearing on camera !

Please visit the hillmanimp.org Youtube video channel HIDO @hidosan2618 and subscribe to see the video series as it appears along with perhaps a few extra artuicles from contributors and supporters.

A big than you to all the donors who have already donated to this platforms costs and made the ability to host Project Doris all the easier.

        Happy New Year John.

All signed up on Youtube and have a unlimited supply of popcorn for the drama to unfold or could it be a thriller?????
From my experience more likely a horror movie about to unfold...... once you start to peel of the layers of sheet metal and see what lies beneath!!

Looking forward to see how it goes, good luck.

        Cheers
        Col.

Hayley will handle the edits, she has used the editing tools before (DaVinci Resolve) and Pat will be on compliance duties

                Hi John

After getting the latest Impressions I tried to find the Doris videos on YouTube on my TV (without the article to hand) and nothing found under searches like 'Doris Hillman' or even 'Hillman Imp Restoration'.

After checking Pg14 of Impressions and moving to my PC I eventually found the Hido San channel

Just thinking... when the videos of Doris start to appear it might be an idea to include 'Imp Restoration' or something similar in the titles, as you'll catch a lot more passing-traffic that way.

Currently there's no hook with the name of the channel or the video-names (eg received 315676092728381)

I think you can actually alter the name of the channel without it affecting any of the old content. I just changed the name of my personal account to The Busy Barn as I'm planning to become a YouTuber this year

                  Cheers Grham

Yes I thougt of changing it as originally it was just for hosting but not got round to it yet, I have a couple of platform updates to do and I am still wiating on logo use permission from 2 sources to add to the intro screens etc.

                  Then its launch time

I was not aware the mags had landed as yet I rarely open my mail any more, must be in the pile

                      Hi John,

Mucho excited to follow this progress. A true step by step Imp restoration guide sounds fantastic!

If I wasn't so far away (Northampton) I'd honestly be round every weekend to lend a hand just so I can learn from a master for my own restoration.

Best of luck with it :)

                      Pog

                        Hi Pog

                        Thanks !

All visitors and help is always welcome, I will have some locally at least

I have all the first run clips ready to go almost, thats the walk around the bodyworjk and the introduction but the cold and bad light was killing the videos and I decided to pause and finish the work bay "garage" first so at least there is heat and light.

The youtube channel will also be renamed to something sensible that folks can actually find by searching

Last ingredient is a couple of more panels from ESP that should be sent this week.

As its easter I also decided through the series we will have an easter egg hunt like the video games of old used to do, I will pop a few "Dorri" and " Elmers around in the videos and at end of the series folks that found the mnost or all of them will be picjked from a draw and a few donated prizes will be given away

All for the fun of it !

Few pictures of the workspace come studio now, plenty light, some heat and just the 16A supply for the welder to fit and off we go.
