I have been posting the progress of the rebuild of the Imp over the past months and is almost completed but due to ill health, I may have to sell the car. Before I advertise it, I thought I I would see if anyone on the site would be interested in it.

    Spec is as follows

1968 Hillman Imp. Originally built and raced by Harry Simpson in Fraser Imp Livery. Won many races until it had an engine and gearbox re-build by Dave Weedon then put into dry storage which is where it just sat gathering dust until I bought it in June 2020.

The original plan was to just tidy the car up and Change it to rally spec and enter the 2021 Jim Clark Rally but this was unforetunately cancelled.

We then found that many parts needed replacing so we decided to do a complete re-build of the car, including the engine. We have a complete pictorial history of the rebuild which has taken the best part of 12 months with no expense spared. All parts supplied by Reg Patten or from the Imp Club. Currently it is being run in and has covered around 80 miles. The car is entered for the Newcastle Lombard Rally Festival on 3rd July and due to I'll health I am not able to compete although the car will be taken and can be seen at the venue on the day or if sold, this would be included. The car is fully road legal and ready to scare old ladies.

Brief Specification is as follows :

    Engine/Box

998 wet liner block, completely rebuilt using new pistons, bearings etc. Wills ringed big valve head with R23 Cam in solid billet machined cam carrier. Bottom end strengrhening plate and large capacity sump. Bronze oil pump gear. Brand new pair of Webbe 40 dcoe's on competition manifold. New clutch, slave cylinder etc. Deep alloy pulleys, Lucas 23/ D4 distributor with lumenition ignition. New cap, leads etc. Competition electric fuel pump and new fuel regulator. Electric water pump with alloy swirl pot and silicone hoses.

Front nissens radiator with top air bleed pipe and copper pipes through to engine bay with silicone hoses.

Gearbox is a rootes competition box built by Dave Weedon. CTS Helical box with 14.95, 8.9, 6.18, 4.48 gearing.

    Body

The bodywork required little work as the shell is completely rust free. We have tried to keep the car in its original livery as raced by Harry even down to the decals on the car and still carries some of the race incidents it encountered in its history. Just an honest historic racecar. Full rollcage, alloy foam filled fuel tank, all new instruments including GPS speedo. Full fire extinguisher system, single seat with 4 point belts. Perspex side windows. Fiberglass vented bonnet and bootlid.

    Running gear

Original Minilite wheels 7"rear, 6" front . Spax adjustable shocks running new World Cup Springs. New front Calipers and discs with new master cylinders and pipes. New kingpins (not fitted as OK at the moment), competition drive shafts and doughnuts. Stripped and painted front and rear subframes.

Needs final fine tuning on a rolling road to ensure the maximum is achieved via timing and carb set up. Have webber jets and tubes from original carbs to change over. Still needs a few small jobs doing to it but hope to have it all finished with a couple of weeks.

If you have serious interest in the car then send me a personal message please or you can email me on adrianshilton@btinternet.com

Also have for separate negotiation a Jack Knight 4 speed straight Cut gearbox, racing spring set up with Willwood 4 poor Calipers and drilled brake disc's, sintered clutch with flywheel, and various other spare parts. We put new Webber carbs on but it turned out to be a faulty fuel regulator so we have the original Webber 40dcoe as well.
