So... a day in the garage. Imps don’t you love them. ?
The noise from the original engine - much oddness. It has no gaps on *any* valve - I can’t get a feeler gauge under any of them. Yet it ran well (clacky noise aside). So it’s in the naughty corner and I will strip it at my leisure to find out exactly what’s going on.
I’ve therefore borrowed Skye’s engine as a temporary measure, as this is my main car right now (I sold the Golf). Engine swap completed in five hours. I’m getting old - my record is half an hour. It’s running, seems happy.
