  • Better brake shoes

Designed and developed by Mintex the Halo compound is a superior compound compared to any off the shelf material. It works better than other materials from cold and does not fade with high temps so ideal for motorsport, fast road, track days etc Excellent compliment to front disc conversion. I still compete on drums all round with this material. There is a bedding in process that if you do it correctly only has to be done once. To get the benefit of the shoes it is essential that your brakes are in good condition to start with. A fully overhauled perfect working order imp drum brake system takes some beating. I suspect most disc brake systems are fitted because people think drums are old hat and have a car that has a poorly maintained brake system and think fitting modern discs is the answer. That is my opinion and i sell a disc brake conversion. Make sure the brake back plates are in perfect condition so the shoes can slide out to contact the drum with as little resistance as possible and ensures full contact.

This back plate has damage where the handbrake mechanism fits this stops the slave cylinder from sliding properly. The damage to the shoe edge support pads either prevents the shoes from contacting drum fully or the edge of the shoe lips over the ridge and lightly contacts the drum heating the shoe material up and causing a glazed high spot that makes that section of the material useless. You can lose 50% of your braking effort with these problems

    1. Ensure slave cylinders can slide (check if back plates have been powder coated that the coating does not go soft with heat and jam slave cylinder) If cylinders do not slide remove them clean back plate and cylinder and lubricate with Coppaslip.
    2. Check there is not a wear groove in the back plate where the handbrake lever pivots as this can cause the slave cylinder to jam on back plate.
    3. Ensure raised pads on back plate that the edges of the shoes rest on are perfectly flat. Any lips or steps will cause shoe to stick and rub on drum building up heat and glazing shoes. Or they will give a false shoes position when adjusting. Apply a minimal amount of Coppaslip to the pads so as not to contaminate shoe material.
    4. Clean drum with brake cleaner
    5. Adjust shoes as per manufacture instructions
    6. Brake from 60 mph to 30 6 to 7 times using a steady brake pedal application. A gentle pull on the handbrake lever to ensure full engagement of the new shoes will help. Do not left foot brake, lock wheels or come to a complete standstill.
    7. After the 7th slow down allow brakes to completely cool (do not park up with foot on brake pedal or handbrake applied as this will cook the shoe against the drum)
    8. The brake shoes will now work from cold. Remove drums clean out re-adjust.
    9. A good practice is to bleed the brakes at this point (not to remove air). This replaces the fluid in the slave cylinders and or calipers. This fluid is the only fluid in the system that is affected by the temperature from the brakes so de-grades.

    1. As above but slave cylinders do not slide.
    2. Check adjusters are free to turn and the serrations are in a good enough condition to hold their position on the shoe pins (i.e. they do not slip off and release adjustment when pedal pressed).
The material should not be confused with old technology materials and old technology bedding in procedures should not be used.
If you do not bed them in they will glaze.
If you bed them in correctly you will never have to do it again unless you drive incredibly gently on brakes and glaze the shoes. If this occurs rough up shoe material with 60 grit emery and repeat bedding in.
