  • Mildred 1963 MK1

Mildred had some fun this year at a few of the shows and a few runs out with her siblings as well as a little visit back to her birthplace.

She is still original, just over 6k off the production line, 30 odd thousand miles and still has the auto choke and pneumatic throttle.

Had to find her a new home in the garage which involved finding quite a bit of space by moving lots of stuff around.

After her last run to one of the shows on the way home we noticed as soon as we stopped at home she was running very poorly, quick check on coolant and this was low.

After parking her up for a few days we did some checks and then decided engine would have to come out for inspection.

Head gasket was completely shot and one of the liners had failed at the top.

Not looking good at this point so time to consider options.

After a bit of consideration it was decided that keeping Mildred with her original engine with matching serial number is crucial.

This would mean having the engine machined and for this we would turn to Andy at Shrigley Engineering.

Engine was loaded into the back of one of the cars and dropped off next time we just happened to be passing.

Once the engine was checked over it could be seen it needed a little bit of work to get back to being in it's prime.

New liners, a skim of the head and block was the first starting point.

A light skim to bring liners flush with the block.

Onto the head now to see how this is.

Can see where the head has been low.
