  • Solex woes and why new old stock is not always what it is cracked up to be

Well after spending so much time on the ignition system, coils, dizzy, the works it was time to pull the carb apart, the lack of idle and cutting out at low revs, the hunting all seemed like ignition.

So a new old stock carb was bought from a very reputable reseller as I gave up on the tatty solex.

Very few NOS early carbs around now.

Took it off car and onto bench, stripped, clean, blew channels through and when I attempted to remove thsi the whole casting simply collapsed

Guess that explains the issue which sounded like an air leak and led to changing of manifold gaskets many times....

Totally collapsed, whole composition of the casting seems to have fell apart

So as we love the old girl, some carnage ensued with the solex casulaty dept and a frankensolex was created from the disorder.
