  • Idle hands do more devilish work - New carb options for the imp

OK, Paul moved to honda civic carbs and they run on the imp very nicely, mounted on a modified strommie manifold.

So I want to try out same but i am not going to notch the chassis.

    Plan

    Pick up old strommie manifold.

Remove studs and get surface flat, open up apertures and cut thread, turn down matching tube for civic couplings and tghread into strommie manifoldso the carbs can bolt on closer to the manifold than other arrangements.

We will see how that pans out.

Yes, have a set on Pauls, runs really sweet on the 930/R17.

But the flanges that Paul made push it into the chassis leg as they are added to the old strommie manifold.

I reckon a bit of milling and two tube inserts to mount carb couplings to direct would let me mount it with a sensible clearance as its the add ons that seem to push it outwards.

      John.

Gary, the idea is in my head at moment, carbs are on way I just need to pick up a strommie manifold now then work out sizes.

Paul has them running really well indeed, just need to get them in a bit and create an air pan. I have been drawing up the adapters on CAD at moment but a lot of the hot keys are on left hand and I cant use that at moment, one handed is taking forever plus I need to get my hands on the actual carbs to size up.

A Honda carburettor could be where it all starts John... Could end up with a whole Honda engine in there before you know it...

                I doubt it.

I love Imp power, no electronical stuff, sorted

Will be nice to see the pest fly though, I think the carbs are not far off same idea. Work on same basic principle as SUs ?

                  Carbs ordered
Manifold on its way from Roger Gill

Just some creative mojo and machine work needed now

Be interested to see how this worked out if you have any photos John.

                      Oli

Was driving around on a version 1 set last weekend, ran very very well from pulling away to up steep hills and flooring it

This is version 2 as i dont want to cut the car body, so a manifold needs burtchered

What era / model Civic are they from, and sort of size are they relative to a 150 Stromberg?

These are 80s as far as I know Oli.Very popular with the stock/hot rod people.

I have a set soaking in plus gas out sie of house as I find that cleansd them up pretty well,

Size wise they are likely same (ish) as strommies

In fact those in the image are mounted on a strommie manifold but I do not want to cut into the chassis leg on DDG (plus thats where my fuel line runs ! ) so I plan a bit of a slice and dice session to see if I can get the carbs further away from the leg, then do something to create an air box which can get air from the engine cover vent area.

Loads of ideas, just need to wait till i can get to them, you know the deal
Gary seems to be the one getting things done these days @Gary Whitaker

Iam not sure about that the transaxale rebuild has been going for a while ,but suppose the tools took a while to get round to .
like the carbs I've rebuilt the strommes but like the idea of su like Dave ,but have you seen the price they going for if they think it will fit a mini then add two zeros!!

Gary, the civic carbs work pretty much same way as the SUs do. Plan ....J,K,L,M have sensors on the exhaust manifold branches to keep an eye on AFR for setting up.

At the moment only hurdle I am mulling over is how to mod the strommie manifold so I can mount them with a little more clearance.

Plan A was to just use the 28/36 , plenty space. Then move on to a Webcon injection body, drops right on. Keith can psot a pic if he has time.

I dont want to cut the chassis and was so impressed by how Pauls runs I wanted to give it a go.

Wish it still had this amount of space to play with
