  • Worst wiring pics - who has some ?

    Just for some Monday Madness

Who has some of those pictures of what never to do in an imp wiring wise, I bet Mike moose549 and Dave Dave Lane have some crackers

Pictures from Imp Standard wiring I have come to expect as the norm, the engine bay wiring might be getting past it but geeze, more effort to stuff this in rear wing cavity than to do it right

Then of course what happens when someone gets the advice to "add an extra earth" to fix ignition issues which should be fixed by correcting the earth fault.

This was actually on Boris ! and one of first things fixed. I actually LEFT this in place for a very long time.

When we do the "Imp Camp Fire" as I call it, you know, lift engine cover and us cave dwellers gather round its great to say see that, DONT DO THAT as I see this very often as the extra earth, all bad.

Dave, thats a great pic at end, folks seem to recoil in horror on the possibility to rewire their imp, but split apart like that shows how little the factory loom really is and thats a good thing.

The black bound blob just makes it look so much worse ! in my view anyway

Wirings simple on Imps , looks far worst than it really is , try the wiring on my W203 Merc if you want complicated

Exactly, so much for canbus to reduce the wires.
I shudder to think how many miles of wire is on my E55......................

Was curious so searched the question.

“Today's luxury cars contain some 1,500–2000 copper wires—totaling over 1 mile in length. To put that into perspective, in 1948, the average family car contained only about 55 wires, amounting to total length of 150 feet.”

That looks like it involves lots of tea and head scratching.

ripped out and thrown in the bin and a new loom from scratch, customer requested we use an auto sparks loom and remove what was not required and add the important stuff in proper wire so that is what we did. Big thanks to Bob Picton for supplying his spare loom whilst mine was on order.

Wonder why they insisted on a 3rd party loom when you could have done as good (if not better) from scratch. Is that some kind of regulation Mike for certain competition ?

Not Imp related, but I was asked by a customer to get rid of this bedside lamp fitting, as it was "useless". They'd changed the fuse "and everthing" but it still wouldn't work.

Bad enough in an imp, this would be worse, I dont have images handy as back in 2001 cameras were still expensive but when we put up our new building the work by the contractor was beggars belief, this was the main contractors "preferred" electrical contractor and they had just done an intrinsically safe building in Dunfermline.

Not sure how that worked out in the end, ours had block work burst (fail on building control fire regs) T&E ripped as it was dragged through the rough blockwork (I had installed 4" steel trunking for all this ! but extra 2 ft to run cables was too much work apparantly) then the lights which would not work, same as your plug, wires not screwed in and to top it off choc bloc and PVC tape wrapped and hiden inside block work and inside steel purlins on roof as buggers were too lazy to run proper lengths.

Best part though was the 200A disty board, 50 way, 1/2 populated and the rest left empty and not blanked, the QS in charge of the job apparantly thought that was OK, must have got his quals from a corn flake packet along with so many new graduates these days,

Needless to say that conversation did not go down well, contractor kicked off job with haste and we brought our own in.

I still pray for the people in Dunfermline
