  • Split rear seats in a saloon

First off id like to say its not as easy as it sounds . I believe some Australian cars had this but having never seen one in person ive no idea how they did it .
Anyway so you decide you want to try this .
You obviously need the complete rear seat set up including a centre pivot ( this is welded into a coupe so grinder needed ) .
First problem is the rear shelf in a coupe is longer so you have two options - extend the rear shelf ( its around 3 inches i think ) , this is the easy option .
    OR
Alter all the pivot points to pull the whole set up back these three inches .
I chose this as an option , it involves using the original outer pivots cut from a saloon rear seat frame and fitting these on the coupes frames and altering the centre pivot angle and centre hole .
It can be done - ive proved it but it needs a lot of thought as well as rare parts before you even start .

Rarer parts in NZ - we never had coupes in local-assembly nor as "official" imports. which I guess is why Mazda "invented" the split-fold rear seat - in 1976!
