  • Remade the rear numberplate

Rear numberplate restoration / alteration done .

Digits are original to the car ( Hills aluminium ) .

Ive made the back so the top and bottom row are slightly closer together as the US spec bumper almost partially obscured the bottom digits unless i had the plate high in which case it obscured the top vent on the lid. Now it does neither

They always seem huge on an Imp , OK the digits must remain the correct size but im sure no cop will spot the backings a tad smaller

Start of the front one , im using aluminium plastic composite , very light , very strong and weatherproof .Back is recessed for the digit clips . It was a goods in sign which i took when next doors builders merchants shut down

Front plate fits and looks perfect ( well to me anyway )
I did alter the front mount so the mounting holes are on the ends and not on that silly small factory bracket they came with , i like the plates low so they dont cover the front lower grill , bit vulnerable but ive not twatted it yet .
I also altered the rear mount so the plate is more vertical with small side vents and theres a larger air gap , almost works as a scoop now . :)
            Useless info time .
Did you know back in the 60s there was were a few main plate makers , ACE , Bluemells , Chas Wright and Hills and that they all had their own font . There was a size regulation on the digits ( 63 and before was 3 1/2 inch and when 7 digit plates became necessary reduced to 3 1/8 inch )
The Chas Wright font became the standard post 2001 ( with some minor alterations )
            Some info here

I like the way Dave can use any old item to a new use, reminds of Blue Peter making tracy island out of old loo rolls and the likes.

Can get Pat PMCG to clean up and polish the one for DDG as he loves that kind of thing. Pressed nymber plate on back needs to be square, it was two oblong ones on car to begin

Period "psort engine cover " mod haha could not save the lid though, when balsted it was too far gone across back lips.
