  • Electricery fuel pumps

I did away with the mechanical pump decades ago as i had one that pumped a small % of fuel into the sump as well as the carbs - not a great plan .
Anyway theres two real places to fit them , either in the engine bay or up front . theres for and against on both
Engine end pros - easy to fit - easy to connect up with nout to do at all at the tank end
Engine end cons - They can look untidy and if your a purist they are wrong for the car
Tank end pros - hidden out of sight or harms way therefor keeping the engine bay neater .
Tank end cons - very involved to install initially , tank out , rerouting of fuel pipes - another hole in the floor and all in all a pain to do.
Ive done both - one on each car , Singer got a tank end one and the Vusky engine end , mainly as its no show car and therefor what it looked like didnt matter .
Theres various pumps on the market , Facet and SU being two - Facets can be noisy so i went with SU ones but the choice is yours . On the tank end one however the outlet pipe is 8mm and of course the main front to back pipe is 1/4 inch ( 6mm ) so i needed an 8mm to 6mm connector , these are available in straight or 90˚ bends - i fitted the 90˚ one on the Singer . fit a cover over a tank end pump to stop it getting hit with all the spares we tend to carry
Its also a great idea to fit a shut off tap esp. on a tank end fitted pump , you can change the pump without draining the tank and even remove it full of fuel . use a Banjo connector for the tank fitting on front mounted pumps
Some WILL need a pressure regulator as the output is too high , Facet ones will need regulating - the SU ones I used did not .
    Safety note
    Electric supply must be fused
A manual dash mounted switch is very handy as is an "on " tail tail light .
Fit an inertia cut off switch so in the event of an accident the pump shuts off - you can get the supply from the alternator or use the oil pressure switch as a shut off - no oil pressure no pump although you cant prime the carbs wired like this .
Supply must be taken so the pumps not live with the ignition switch in the aux position .
There are tank and engine end pumps - suck or blow - make sure you get the correct one .
    Thats about it really

Pump fitted well here under the tank - not the shut off tap

Do electric pumps supply a more constant reliable flow of fuel?

Very reliable and more regulated plus they self prime so for example if you run out of fuel or leave the car stood for weeks on end its simply a case of turning on the ignition , waiting a few seconds for the pump to do its thing then start right up , no winding over and over on the starter until the fuel gets through

What happens to the original mechanical pump? Can you get a blanking plate?

Hi Dave, what thread is the outlet at the fuel tank? Ordering banjo fitting before the tanks out and it doesn’t specify in the workshop manual?

1/8 " NPT direct from tank is what I used

You pop one of Bobs tank filters in as well, lot easier when it is out and in good light

Already fitted! Do I need another filter before the electric pump?
