Had a change of plan on this and scrapped the original aluminium field coils as i found a set of copper ones made at Auto and General in the 70s .
One issue was the fact the North / south winding were 90˚ out .
Yes it would still work --- only it would run backwards
Anyway after much head scratching i managed to fit these copper field coils in 90˚ out from how they were designed to be fitted and match the North / South poles of the old alloy ones - therefor it should run the correct way.
And the reason for using the copper fields is simple --- so much more torque and power
                  So its had
                  A new Armature
                  New field coils
Two new bushes - pre soaked in oil
Full set of genuine Lucas brushes
                  New field coil post
Once finished it will also have a NOS genuine Bendix .
Il fit this on Monday and spray it up properly after its been on the test bed to see how it reacts under load ( and to see if it goes the right way

So how did it pan-out Dave?

Also how did you solder the new brushes on? Can't really see from the pics if the wires are inside the tubes on the end-plate as the originals were

can these be replaced as at factory

You can replace these no problem , some are soldered , some crimped , some both , just a case of getting the old brushes out and fitting new ones , hope its not crimped as they are pigs
